  • This artwork is to remind myself of the trouble the fish population is experiencing. There is much demand for capital gain on pollock fish in the market. Large fish trawlers capital on pollock while discarding nontargeted fish that rural communities rely on for winter sustenance. Today the practice of trawlers has caused much unrest by Native leaders across Alaska. Subsistence resources are being decimated leaving many smoke houses not getting the needed resources as before.  We pray that these resources return.

Ancestral Yup'ik believed that the creator, Ellam Yuan, would give permission to all creatures to celebrate with man. Each animal species was given permission to renew migration or to make itself available for harvest. Here the guide in fish form, announcing to all fish to do their part. A command from the creator himself to allow for another celebration with humans. Because the resource was not wasted in the preparation process and the help it gave everyone through the winter. It was said, “When man’s mind changes, so will the world and the environment.”
