  • After hours of reading and illustrating masks, I drifted into sleep. Suddenly, the whooshing sound of wings and the wind jolted me awake. As I opened my eyes, I saw the ghost of a raven, pure white, landing and folding its wings near my feet. I tried to rise, but my body remained asleep. The raven hopped toward me, cawing with its mouth wide open, its eyes fixed on my face. It moved its head from side to side, scrutinizing me with each eye in turn.

Then, it stood tall, spread its wings to the sky, and took a deep breath. As it did, the feathers on its chest parted, revealing a face with terrifying eyes staring straight at me. Alarmed, my body shook. They vanished, but my eyes remained open. Immediately, I went to my desk and drew them, my eyes still wide open.
