As a child, being so close to the performance was both beautiful and thrilling. You could feel the wind from their dance fans as they moved. Every dancer followed the drum in perfect unison, guided by the conductor’s voice as he led the singers into each new verse. He held his dance stick—adorned with carved figurines—and kept flawless rhythm.
I remember hearing “Apasugaq” Augustine Heavy leading the drumming, singing, and dancing. His powerful voice—half-sung, half-spoken—rose above the others, carrying the same raw energy you hear in blues or rock and roll. The whole group moved with vigor, as one body, one heartbeat.
