I am incredibly pleased to have switched to StarLink and not have to worry about usage and fees between household members. These little units can go anywhere there is stable ground. I placed mine atop the little woodshed drying out the Kuskokwim driftwood from last summer.
The litlle dish of wonders, StarLink, is changing remote satellite connections.
The villages are still catching up to a faster internet service but is changing. There are fifty-six villages in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta region with a fine crafts person who sometimes offers their work on social media with limitations.
One could see houses in Bethel with the mini dishes that have popped up with auto heat, self-adjusting individual wonders of technology. Previously, speed and usage were always in play. Slow-motion speed and charge-by-kilobyte. But now, we can have two Wi-Fi channels on the same router running devices without change in speed. No worry about usage.
Before FaceBook, I used to own a StarBand satellite dish back in 2003 while living in Mekoryuk, a 4-foot dish you can install yourself. There were 2 or 3 households at the time. Experimentally, I was broadcasting “garage radio” from a bandwidth PC card that did not require an FCC license.
With StarBand, the radio had the remarkable capability to broadcast up to five miles out to sea using a small CB antenna. It even connected to a live music radio station from a different state. The Alaska Weather satellite link provided valuable forecasts before the winds reached Nunivak Island. The local fishermen who could hear the radio broadcast would prepare their journey back. While these seasoned seafarers could read the weather cues over the distant horizon, having a reliable backup forecast was helpful.
Technology has made significant strides, profoundly influencing how humans interact in the modern world. But that, my friend, is a tale for another time.
