Among the Yup’ik, every animal is a messenger to Ellam Yua, the Person of the Universe. After the final harvests are safely stored, communities gather to give thanks through dance, honoring the gifts of the land and sea.
 
The Seal Dance features a hand-carved mask with eyes that follow from every angle. The chin of the mask depicts a hunting scene with various animals, painted with acrylics. Figurines dance alongside the central mask, and feathers add a sense of motion.
 
This Seal Dance embodies the belief in the seal’s self-sacrifice, ensuring that families can live from its essence and continue the cycle of dance festivals. During these festivals, the spirit of the seal celebrates with the people through dance, joy, and giving.
