Surfing Waves – Limited Edition (3 of 3) This shadow box frame carries the memory of a solitary 45-mile voyage from fish camp to Mekoryuk, tracing the restless waters off Nunivak Island. Alone in an 18-foot red aluminum Lund, I navigated the shifting moods of the sea—gear and dried fish tucked beneath a tarp, eyes scanning the horizon for signs of change. Then the wind rose. Whitecaps surged, growing wild as they raced toward shore.

The carved wood within this piece echoes that moment—fluid, untamed, alive. Its flowing grain mimics the rhythm of the waves, while the embedded eyes seem to follow you from every angle, as if bearing witness to the journey. Only one remains in this limited edition series (3 of 3)—a final tribute to resilience, memory, and motion.

  • This piece was born from a moment etched in memory—a 45-mile journey home from fish camp to Mekoryuk, along the unpredictable waters near Nunivak Island. I was alone in a small 18-foot red aluminum Lund boat, gear and dried fish secured midship beneath a tarp, mindful of the weather’s sudden shifts.

Then the wind rose. Whitecaps rolled toward me, growing fierce as they neared the shore. I had no choice but to surf the waves—riding up and down the swells with a modest 40-horsepower outboard, steering away from the crashing surf.

That’s when I saw the gas tank swinging on empty.

I reached for the backup, only to realize the fuel line didn’t match. Panic surged. I cried out to the Creator—not for myself, but for my children. I was the only parent left. I pleaded for a chance, for mercy, for safe passage.

I’ve never prayed so hard in my life.

Every sense sharpened—my fragile body, the roaring wind, the towering waves. I was fully present in the storm. And somehow, I reached a small harbor tucked behind the chaos. I anchored, peeled off my sweat-soaked life jacket, and checked the tank. Bone dry. I opened the fuel line—nothing. Tried the engine—no sound. I had run on empty. Truly.

That moment deepened my faith in the power of prayer.

Life brings storms to every one of us. We face danger, uncertainty, and the limits of our own strength. But we are never alone. The Creator is always near. Everything comes to pass. My task is to hold fast to faith—to meet each challenge with courage and humility.

Every breath is borrowed. Every boat, every body, every heartbeat—temporary. But the spirit that prays, that endures, that believes—that is eternal.
